LUMEA COSMETICI RISPONDE
The skin is composed of two main layers, the epidermis and the dermis, which are located on a fatty layer called the hypodermis.
The epidermis is the outermost layer, the one on which we directly apply the cosmetic, it is a stratified epithelium that continuously renews and differentiates, consisting of 5 overlapping cellular layers:
- stratum corneum, the most superficial, the one we can touch
- lucid layer
- granular layer
- spinous layer
- basal layer

The epidermis has a protective function and acts as a passage for the underlying layers, namely towards the dermis, where
the hair follicles and sebaceous glands are located.
It is also home to blood vessels and nerve endings.
In the hypodermis, subcutaneous fat is deposited, which insulates from temperature variations and physical shock
and contains even more blood vessels.
When we apply the cosmetic on the epidermis, how is it decided what is absorbed and what is not?
- The size of the molecules
- Oil-soluble ingredients penetrate much better than water-soluble ingredients because the skin itself is impermeable to water
- Integrity/hydration of the skin
- Skin temperature

COSMETICS CAN:
1) Distribute on the upper part of the skin and potentially penetrate a little into the stratum corneum (the outer layer of the skin)
2) Penetrate beyond the upper layer of the skin to the central part of the epidermis (granular layer)
3) Penetrate into the deeper layers of the epidermis (basal layer).
The effectiveness of the penetration of actives into our skin and thus the actual effectiveness of the cosmetic depends on how well we care for our skin and the quality of the cosmetic.
- The scrub reduces the amount of dead cells on the stratum corneum, so the actives, instead of encountering a difficult 'barrier' to overcome, find young cells happy to absorb the cosmetic.
- Quality actives with fine molecules actively penetrate through the epidermis
- Using the right cosmetic for your skin type and age allows for proper penetration and effectiveness of the cosmetic.
